GMG Acquires Death Row Assets

Death Row Records

Global Music Group, a Tennessee based independent label purchases Death Row Records for 25 million dollars on Wednesday. MGM beat out bids from Warner Music Group, Evergreen Copyrights, and Koch Entertainment.

Death Row Records was founded in 1991 by Marion “‘Suge” Knight. They label enjoyed huge success in the mid 90’s’, mainly due to the successful releases of Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Tupac Shakur. After years of financial mismanagement, Death Row was put on receivership after Knight filed bankruptcy in the wake of a $107 million judgement to be paid out to label co-founder Lydia Harris.

It is reported that the majority of the labels assets are related to Tupac Shakur, including master recordings and compositions, many of which are unreleased.

With the control of unreleased Tupac tracks, it is likely that we will see a posthumous release by the end of this year.
